High stance has the highest damage and slow overhead attacks but the worst blocking and dodging. Mid stance has the best blocking and also the widest horizontal sweep on attacks. Low stance has the fastest attacks and the best dodge, but low damage and short range. There are three stances: low, medium and high. Learn to change stances on the fly as soon as you can. Find a weapon you like and upgrade its skills. This doesn't lock you out of the other weapons you can use whatever you like, though keep in mind that different weapons scale to different stats and they have their own skill trees. After the tutorial mission, the game will let you pick two weapons.So just equip stuff that you find and you don't really have to use the blacksmith if you don't want to, in your first run of the game. Learn that, at least at the beginning, most loot is disposable. You'll find a lot of loot and the blacksmith is also quite complicated.If a shrine is too far from a boss, you're probably missing a shortcut (or two) If you see a ladder too high to climb, that's a shortcut. If you see a door that says "must be opened from the other side", that's a shortcut. Always be on the lookout for shortcuts to open.It's probably one of the most important mechanics in the game and it's also a lot of fun. (press R1 right after attacking to recover some of your Ki, which is Nioh's version of stamina). Do you have experience with the Souls games or bloodborne? Not that Nioh is identical to those or anything, but you'll have a head start compared to someone who didn't.
